BATHROOM REGULATIONS - ZONING

Locations containing a bath, a shower or a cabinet containing a shower
and/or bath are defined as areas of increased electrical hazard. The
requirements for safety for these locations are based on the application
of a zonal concept, the particular requirements for each zone and beyond
being based
on the perceived degree of risk of electric shock.
- Zone 0 the interior of the bath tub or shower tray
- Zone 1 above the bath tub or shower tray to a height of 2.25m
- Zone 2 an area extending 0.6m beyond the bath tub or shower tray and above the bath if over 2.25m
- Zone 3 an area extending 2.4m from the outer limit of Zone 2 to a height of 2.25m
USE OF EQUIPMENT
Any electrical item approved for use in a zone may also be used in another
zone with a higher number, but not in a lower number zone.
Zone 0 requires electrical products to low voltage (max. 12V) and be
IPX7
Zone 1 requires electrical products to be IPX4 or
better, or SELV with the transformer located in zone 3 or beyond. If
the fitting is 240V,
a 30mA RCD must be used to protect the circuit.
Zone 2 requires electrical products to be IPX4 or better or SELV with the
transformer located in zone 3 or beyond.
Zone 3 the regulations do not specify any IP number for
zone 3, however reference should be made to the manufacturers data in case
it indicates any exclusion. Portable electrical equipment is not permitted other than
that using a SELV or shaver unit.
